Chilcuague- The golden root, origin and usages
Chilguague - The golden root
Chilcuague, Heliopsis longipes, It is a perennial herb endemic to the Sierra Gorda and Sierra de Álvarez regions of Guanajuato, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí.
The root of chilcuague is used as a condiment in sauces, stews and alcoholic beverages because of its pungent taste. In traditional medicine, it is used to soothe muscular pains and toothaches, as well as a deworming, insecticide and fungicide to eliminate skin fungi such as those that cause athlete's foot.
The name chilcuague comes from the Nahuatl chilmecatl, which refers to the spicy taste of the root and its thread-like appearance. It could be translated as ‘spicy rope’.
Chilcuague root contains a chemical compound called afinin, which is the alkamide responsible for the anti-infectious, anaesthetic and flavouring properties of this ancient root. This traditional knowledge has been reinforced by scientific knowledge, as there are theses and dozens of scientific articles that recognise its antifungal, bactericidal, insecticidal, analgesic and anaesthetic effects.
